A two-storeyed wooden house of sever rooms in Worcester street, which has beti unoccupied for three months, and was recently renovated preparatory to reoceupation." was entirely destroyed by fire last evening. An alarm was given, and two steam engines, a horsed chemical, and a motor chemical with eighteen men turned out. The fire had a strong hold when first discovered, and it was 6ome time before a supply of water was available. The chemical engines did little more than prevent the names spreading to the adjoining buildings. Water was eventually obtained from the Christchureh School Baths, both 6team cnirines being used to force the water round the intervening block. The house was tho property of Mr W. Batt, and was insured in the Standard Office. The amount is not available. The adjoining boarding-house had a narrow escape.
