TELEPHONE POSSIBILITIES

■ Improvements in the construction of telephones now make telephonic communication possible for a distance of no less than 2,600 miles. This means that it soon will ho possible to speak to a friend in any part of New Zealand, no matter how remote, if it is possible to be connected. It is believed that this development will revolutionise business methods. The Acting Bntish Consul at Stockholm has published details of the new invention. He says that the inventors are two Swedes, Messrs C. ’ Enger and J. C. Holmstrom. Tho former is chief engineer in the Stockholm Telephone Administration, and the latter is I president of the Telegraph Company’s trainI iilg establishment. By this invention.-they I claim, telephonic communication can take , place over a distance of 2,500 railed 'with i perfect clearness. This new invention has not only made telephonic communication possible between Berlin and Stockholm, but lias also opened the door to the possibility : of communication over a much greater dis- | tance. The invention is a microphone, 1 which has increased the sounding capacity by 100 per cent. Recent experiments have given excellent results at a distance of 4.000 , kilometres (2,500 miles) with 4.5 millimetre 1 copper wires, and of 400 kilometres with 4 millimetre iron wire. To achieve this res -It the apparatus has to be made from forty to fifty times as strong as the apparatus formerly in use. ’
