-Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., has rotiU'nod to Dunedin from Invercargill, He goes north on Monday. ( J ho Rev. T. Tait, of St. Paul's Church, Christchurch, has been asked if he will allow himself to be called to the pastorate of the leading Presbyterian church in Brisbane (Queensland). The stipend offered is £750 per annum. This is at least the fifth time that an effort has been made to induce Mr Tait to leave lii.s present charge. He has not yet come to a. decision in the matter. The dqiosed Shah, Mahomed Ali, has left Persia. Yesterday afternoon at the cross wharf .he landing staff of H.M. Customs met to say farewell officially to Air 8. P. Sherwood. late expert to the department, who is retiring from the service as a result of the retrenchment scheme. Air P. Donll (senior landing waiter), in making a. presentation to Air Sherwood of a case of silver-mounted pipes and tobacco, referred to the pleasant relations that had always existed between the recipient and Die other members of the staff, wished him every success in his future, and trusted that he would sometimes think of the comrades he was now leaving. Alaekenzio, accompanied by .Messrs P. Clifton and W. Boucher, arri\cd last night. An extensive programme, arranged for to-day, includes visits to Die Tumala vineyards, the Friniley orchards, the canning factory, and the Orataid experimental station. The Minister will receive several deputations in the evening, and meet Dm Partners’ Union to talk over agricultural matters. Air Alackenzie motors to Alapicr to-morrow. Mr A. P. Bateman, an English elocutionist of note, has arrived in Dunedin, and will give recitals next week. He 1 ua.s been appearing on the platform in the cities of the Commonwealth with consideriililo success. A deputation of leading citizens of Auckland waited on Die mayor this morning, ana asked him to call a public meeting with a view to arranging a suitable reception to Sir •Ifisepli Ward on hie arrival at Auckland on September 30.
