THK POSITION IN CHRJSTCHURCH.' July 22. The unemployed to-day formed a procession and visited tho houses of members of Parliament in succession. They also went to the Council Chambers, wheTe they met the mayor and had a long discussion on the situation. WELLINGTON, July 22. to a deputation who complained aoont the cessation of road works in the Wanganui district, the Hon. R. M'Kenzic said that he agreed as to the urgency of opening up Government land, but he was not going to start public works simply to provido.employment for workers. This cry had been tried on him several times before in other places, but they wore, not going to force the Government's hand in that way. Any work which could bo proved legitimately neceesary would be done if the money were furrrjehed. About twenty men waited on the Mayor of Christchui-ch vosterday and asked for work. The "Mayor stated that tho Council wore doing their utmost with the funds at thefr command, but at present they were spending £SOO a month on labor, and if this rate bf expenditure were maintained for six months a heavy rate would Have to be levied to maJ<e up the deficiency. He advised the deputation to bring more pressure to bear on local members of Parliament in order to get a Government subsidy.
