CITY POLICE COURT. (Before J. R. Bartholomew, Esq., S.M.j Drunkenness.—A first offender, who was drunk on the railway station, was fined 10s or forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Another first offender was fined ss, with the usual alternative. Eliza Switalli. with thirty-one previous convictions, win also fined 10s or forty-eight hours’ hare labor. Jane Whittaker (sixty-seven previous convictions) was similarly dealt with. Alleged Theft.—William Gilbert-, .defended by Mr Hay, pleaded not guilty fc a charge that at Dunedin yesterday he did steal one overcoat, value £2 15s, the property of John Mair.—Chief-detective Herbert said that the defendant was only arrested last night, and as the witnessei were not present, he desired a remain until Monday first. The evidence woulc be very clear, and probably another man would be charged with him.—Mr Hay said that defendant was a man of respectable character, and had been employed ir Dunedin for the last seven or eight years He asked that- reasonable bail be fixed.— Defendant was remanded 'till Monday May 10, bail being fixed at £25 for himself and‘one surety of £25.
