LECTURE BY PROFESSOR BLACK. Last night, in the chemistrv lecture hall of the University of Otago, Professor Black delivered a lecture on chemistry, the proceeds of w Inch go to assist the large committee of Dunedin ladies who. by means of a. bazaar to be held in Julv, are endeavoring to provide the students of Otago with a much-needed social hall. The audience was large and interested—at times amazed—at the wizardry of the learned doctor, who, “by his so potent art, ’ conjured with the elements—-made earth, air. water, fire, and color ohev his bidding with the aid of a few bottles and an mvfllmiblG ussistsnt. Xlis lecturer however, scorning to assume the cloak of magic with which the uninitiated would have invested him, always took care to explain from the depth of his chemical lore the rationale of his experiments. Variety was added to a lecture alreadv sufficiently interesting hr the professor’s storehouse, of anecdote* and historical ieminiscences, by his unfailing humor, and by the exuberance of spirits exhibited bv a crowd of medical students, who. eager a*s always for knowledge, thronged the back seats and blocked the passage ways. i-udey, M.P., who presided, during the evening complimented the professor on the skill with which he had delivered a lecture on a technical subject so as to make it of such absorbing interest to his audience, and assured the°students “ la *' they had no better friend than Dr Black. Cheers for the lecturer and the chairman closed the meeting.
