WAIKOUAITI NOTES.

Another Easter has come and gone, and ivc have settled again to the ordinary routine of life. We had the usual influx of holiday-trippers, and as the weather remained fine throughout they appeared to have a good time generally, the many ideal picnic resorts which we can boast of being well patronised. Boarding-houses and empty cottages were all full up, but a decrease in the number of campers was very noticeable. The threatening state of the weather prior to the, holidays probably accounted for this. There were no local functions, and a large number of residents spent their time on the bowling green and tennis courts. From a Waikouaiti point of view the new train arrangements are an absolute failure, and are causing a good deal of inconvenience. It is an unusual spectacle to see the two afternoon expresses whizzing past the station, and local athletic bodies are greatly concerned at the departure. It was the custom of city clubs to travel by the afternoon express, as it entailed no hardship on allowed ample time to finish the matches, and also suited admirably local sports when visiting Palmerston. Commercial travellers are wailing bitterly, and do not relish being imprisoned here all day, nor do they find any solace when we draw their attention to the extra facilities they now have of viewing our beautiful scenery The one, and only one, ray of consolation we have is that the visiting banker is compelled to remain here until five o’clock on visiting days. He formerly took his departure at a quarter to three, which was always a grievance with us. .Needless to say, the oanker is of the same opinion as the “ commercials.” April Ki.
