TROUBLE AT PETONE WORKSHOPS. Jn the Railway Workshop at Petone yesterday a meeting of employees was held to discuss matters appertaining to the recent trouble over promotions and appointr ments. Some weeks ago the men held a meeting hi protest against the department's action, in promoting an ex-Manawatu employee witti, it was stated, only about five or six years' experience to a position of senior hand in preference to local men of much longer service at Petone. It was decided to appoint representatives from the different departments in the shops to form a deputation to wait upon the Minister. LABOR FOR QUEENSLAND. Mr Pryor, secretary to the Employers' Federation, has been advised that the secretary of the Employers' Federation in Queensland is prepared to find employment for all the workers in the building' trade available that Mr Pryor can recommend. The secretary of the* Wellington Trades Council, on the other hand, states that in reply to an inquiry be has received a cablegram stating that bricklayers' work is not plentiful in Queensland. THE BROKEN RIVER # TROUBLE. CHRISTCHURCH, March 9. About thirty of tlie men employed on the Broken River railway works left work yesterday, refusing to accept the new system of payment at k\ 3d per truck instead of 8s per day. It is understood that others will also abandon their work.

At last night's meeting the Dunedin Painters' Union passed the following resolution):—"That this union are strongly of opinion that all resisted immigration should at once cea<se. excepting in respect to the wives and children of 6uch persons as ha.ve sailed from Great Britain and Ireland prior to June 1, 1909, and have settled in this Dominion; and, further, that the Government be urged to take such immediate steps as will ensure the workers of the Old Country and Australia, being apprised of the fact that the supply of workeis in the Dominion is ereaily m excess of the demand.'*
