BOWLS.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY. NOTES ON MONDAY'S PLAY. (Telegraphed by Our Special Reporter.) The first Association championship tournament held at Christchurch under the auspices of the N.Z.8.A., managed and controlled entirely by the Christchurch Centre, .was started punctually at 9.30, the fiist round in the rinks finishing at noon, by which time the warm sun liad made considerable improvement in the five greens used. The following was the state of the games at the various heads: SECTION I. United Green. —First Round.— In the game between Clark and Jacques the Palmerston South rink showed the better form, and Lefevrc was extremely careful H. Price (Newtown) won easily from Scott (Roslyn). The latter's rink played a poor game. Rowley appeared to hold Webb safe until the nineteenth head, when the local men failed badly. Sheridan had put up such a big score in the early stages of the game that although Ashburton (Hart) made a gallant effort towards the finish, the end was too near, and Sheddan took care not to allow any pots. —Second Round.— In the game Jacques against Webb, the latter, considered a strong player, could not hold United. Hart had a ding-dong game against R, H. Scott up to the tenth head, thence onwards Ashburton held the opposition at their mercy. The game between Price (Newtown) and Nelson (Clinton) was peculiar, Clinton allowing Newtown to get in two fives, and nearing the finish Newtown almost won. Crowley just won from Clark after a give-and-take game. —Third Round.— Webb's win. against Clark was due to Clark’s inability to avert a 6 at the sixteenth head. Crowley gave Jacques a hard game, and got the jack at the last head. R. H. Scott’s team wore late in beginning. and Nelson (Clinton) got the win by keeping their bowls well mixed wifh Roslyns. Price (Newtown) beat HaTt after a close game. SECTION 11. Sydenham Green. ■ —First Round.— Hay and Wyatt played a close game up to halfway, when Day's men built well, and they had a sustained margin at the finish. _ Raphael's rink showed poor form against Erskine, and Southland piled up a hie score without being extended. ° Stark’s team ran away from their opponents. .Mitchell (Sydenham) played an exceedingly poor game against Ashburton. —Second Round.— Quito unexpectedly Erskine’s team, after .showing tirst-cbics form, went under to Manchester, who played another sterling game. " Stark got away from Wyatt early in tho game, and after putting in 6 at the fourteenth head, left no chance for the Dunedin rink. Another run-away game was that between Day and Redpath, the former getting in_ 5 at the nineteenth head, and extinguishing the chances of Rcdpath's team. Raphael proved too strong for Sydenham. —Third Round.— Raphael’s team wop easily from Manchester. the Ashburton rink failing after rain affected the green to reproduce their excellent form. Wyatt’s team played a much better game, and beat Redpath. Stark's team also played with confidence, and had no difficulty in their game against Day’s quartet. Erskiiie's 45 against Mitchell's 14 was accounted for by tiie fact that Mitchell’s team were utterly unable to get the length. SECTION 111. Canterbury Green. —First Round.— M'Dougall v. John Taylor.—ln the early stages tho former team got a strong lead, and at the fourteenth head were 21 to Meadowbank’s 11. The latter then.' by good all-round play, pub on 3, 5, 1, 1, 2, and with two heads to go were 2 up. M'Dougall then got 5, but the Southern team came again, the last head resulting in a score ; Taylor 25, M‘Dougall 21. Hendry v. M'Gallan.—Low scoring was the order, and an even game resulted in Canterbury getting home by 1 point after a score of 2 on the last head. Hayman v. A. II Crawford.—Roslyn never appeared to have a hope, and were, in fact, outclassed, only placing the mat at six ends. Hunter v. Townsend.—The Victoria Club team were too generous in allowing their opponents to get away with a long lead, but they made up a lot of leeway towards the finish. —Second Round.— M'Dougall treated Hendry in a similar manner, his team playing a sounder game in this round than they did in the first round. Townsend met Crawford (Roslyn), and the latter fell away in the last half of the game. Victoria played with plenty of condence, and secured a win. Crawford’s play as skip was not by any means up to tournament standard. Hayman (Kaiapoi) met Hunter (Northend), and was beaten by 1 point. Kaiapoi deserved a belter fate,’for they put up a good fight in this game, as they also did in the Hist round. * , Al'Gallan’s rink gave Taylor’s team plenty t-i do, but the Meiidowbank players were unable to hold Sydenham, although they held the mat for the la-st six heads. —Third Round.— Crawford (Roslyn) beat Hunter (North End) after an open game. Alter reaching the fourteenth head Townsend went away from Hayman.

J. Taylor (Mcadowbank), playing carefully and better than he had done earlier in the day, was successful against Hendry. M'Dougall had nothing to spare in his game against M'Oallan, who gave a most creditable exhibition of all-round play, his drawing being especially clean and'accurate. SECTION IV. St. Albans Green. —First Bound.— Ballinger v. Barton.—The latter started off with a 4, bub evidently expended their strength in the effort, and the Wellington team getting the mat simply kept the score going. Brackenridge v. Calvert.—The Victoria team were ffdge.ty for a few ends, but after getting the stiength of the green they ran r.wav from their opponents. Brackenridge is playing up to his old form. M'Mullan v. Grcig.—Green Island playing a grand game, and MAlullan being practically faultless in drawing, left no chances for the Canterbury men. Hancock (St. Clair) caused a surprise by downing Goldstone (Waimate). —.Second Round.— Barton gave Brackenridge a strong game, and at the seventeenth head was 7 up.’ Brackenridge stuck doggedly to his task, and equalised matters at the nineteenth head, tho score being 18 all. Lawrence, however, managed to get in two singles. Bartons team, as a whole, are improving ;is the play proceeds M'.MLilian met Hancock, and the former was expected to win without trouble, but the St. Clair rink put up a great battle, and scored their second win. Evidently it was not Goldstone’s day out, for he met with another defeat at the hands of Greig. His third man is not np to Coltman’s standard, and to some extent this is accountable for Waimate’s poor display. 1 . Ballinger only just won from Calvert. —Third Round.— After playing two games and making a good show Hancock went under by 1 point to Greig, ' 1 Waimate (Goldstone) came to light and ea«dy beat Green Island.

. Darton*« luck had taken a change, and an meeting ’Calvert the Lawrence teain, after the fourteenth head, sailed away. _ Ballinger’s rink defeated Brackenridge, a rival Wellington club. SECTION V. Christchurch Green. —First Round.— M'Laren, with one of the strongest rinks that over left the Dunedin Green, won from Munro (Wellington). The game between Cameron and Smith was, stubbornly fought, and won by St. Kilda only in the last few ends. Sanders had hard work to pace it with Skoglund (Greymouth), but might have won at the last head but for narrow play and rubbing against Greymouth’s wood. Allnutt easily held Nash, whose team did not give the skip much chance. —Second Round.— Nash lost liis second game to Cameron, the Palmerston North team being hardly up to tournament form. Sanders got the lead from the start, and liis team playing a solid game Kaitana Avon easily. M’Laren's game against Skoglund was a very easy Avin for the former. Caledonian, skipped by Smith, defeated Allnutt's men by 8 points. —Third Round.— Smith (Caledonian) got a 6 at the eighteenth head, and Nash, being 8 down, did not manage to get the necessary points. Allnutt beat Cameron, and after the twelfth liead had no difficulty in winning. Sanders met M ‘Laron. The game, which Avas a sound one, resulted in favor of Kaituna. Munro ran aAvay from the Grevmouth representatives. SECTION VI. Canterbury Green. —First Round.— J. Lock v. Maddison.—While the Christchurch team did not appear to relish tho green, the Invercargill men built better than their opponents, although at one part of the game Christchurch had a great chance for a hatful, both Bishop and Maddison missing a trail by the fi action of an inch. At the sixteenth head the scores wore even; then the-Southern team got in 2, 1, 3, leaA’ing the local men a big conDact, Avhich they were unable to fulfil. The game Avas an exceedingly interesting one. Marriott v. Edwards.—Temuka, for a now dub, put up a creditable performance in getting within lavo of their opponents, more especially in vicav of the fact that Canterbury had tho services of A. Gillies (Dunedin) as third man.

Ingram v. Gibbs-Jordan.—A A'ery in-and-out game. Scores almost even at the nineteenth head, Ingram holding the position. Chegwin a-. Johnstcne.—Chegwin’s team put on 8 before the St. Albans men got a chance; then for six heads the latter put in some good work, although Johnstone missed a splendid opportunity at one head b >’ playing a short boivl. After alternate scoring the game Avas 14 all at the seventeenth head. After that Sydenham had no difficulty in finding the jack. —Second Round.— Lock’s team, continuing to play a brilliant game, had no difficulty in defeating Edwards. Ingram’s team put up some fine heads, and Johnston ay as unable to save. f lhe latter did not slioav any of his form of two years ago. In the game between Maddison and Marriott, after getting a long lead (21 to 11) in at the sixteenth head, the latter generously played wide, and Christchurch, getting the mat, left their opponents, who did not get another chance. When Christchurch lay 4 Gillies and Marriott both failed in the endeavor to spring the jack. The victory of Maddison’s team was a surprise. Chegwin was again successful, defeating Jordan without much trouble. His team also played well. Ingram scored double the number of points registered by Johnson. —Third Round.—, Temuka (Kd winds) put Christchurch (Bishop) to the test, and in all-round plav demonstrated marked ability. Monahan being particularly brilliant. The game betwen Marriott and Lock was a fine exhibition of bowling, and Avas only won at the last head by Marriott. Up to tho fourteenth head the scores wore level, and at the seventeeth head the board shoved 17 all. Every bowl was carefully played, but at tho ‘ twenty-first head Marriott’s men built a splendid‘head, leaving Lock no option but to come up a' ifh a rumiing bowl and to attempt a draw with his second. He played a magnificent shot Avith his first,- but afterwards was short, and lost by a single point. Ingram ran array from ChegArin, and at tho fourteenth head hod piled up 32 to Chegwin’s 4. St. Albans (Johnston) had a narroAv ivin over Rangitata (Jordan).

SECTION VII. United Green. —First Round.— Denny's team outplayed Stevens’s team. Caledonian (Collins), in the first half of the game, could not hold Wellington (ihompson), and Collins himself Avas far fiom his best. Had he played moderately in the first half, Caledonian Avould Imre given Wellington a hard game. ' Hardie beat BarloAv rather unexpectedly. Christchurch had put up 11 in four heads before Canterbury made a start. This handicap extinguished any chance Barlow may have had. Ihe game between Brackenridge, jnn., and Crowley via.; A’ery close, and after a fine exhibition by both sides Avas Avon by Crcwley by 1 point, —Second Round.— Brackenridge Avas easily defeated by Hardie. Collins, playing much better than in the preA’ious round, beat Stevens in the last six ends. Thompson succeeded in the last two ends against Denny. Barlow had put on 8 to Crowley’s 20 at the fourteenth head, and did not make neadumy aftenvards. —Third Round.— Barlow again suffered defeat, this time at the hands of Brackenridge, jnn., Avho had doubled Barlow’s total at the thirteenth head. Crowley (Grcenmcadows) has an excellent- team, and in tjie game against Hardie had his game Avon at the fifteenth head. Collins .met Denny, who had a lead at the 'fifteenth head of 24 to 17, bub Caledonian then made their effort, and held the mat for the remaining six heads. Stevens proved too strong for Thompson s four. t r SECTION VIII. Christchurch Green. —First Round.— Mercer got home from Saneran only at the last head, after a close gam© all through. Harrison (Timaru) at first apeared to lie outclassed in meeting Waddell (Oamaru), but after the thirteenth head, where Waddell was 12 to Harrison’s 6, the latter put on 15. r Hoffman had the lead all the wav, and by careful drawing defeated the opposing Mouit and Barry bad a one-sided gam© till the twentieth head, when Barry had a chance, but- failed. J —Second Round.— Harrison and Hoffmann plavcd a great game, as the scores (13 to 12) "indicate. Moult just got m a bowl at tho last head aS AA a ™, V< ii’ beat Mercer by 1 point. Waddell and Bawn Avere unevenly matched, the Phoenix man getting well through nd <ool ' ing a S oo * l iead ° right Sansom Avas , unequal to the task of stopping Barry’s drawing. —Third Round.— Timaru, on the Avhole, put in solid workarid deserved their win. ’ Victoria beat United. Moult had a runaway victory over Sansom (Rangiora). Hoffman was too formidable for the Oamaru men.

, - SECTION rx. St. Albans Green. ‘ —First Round.— « Payne v. Crasswell.—Kaituna won easily. Rnd should, on their early form, be well np in the cection. ■ Spiller had no chance against A. L. Parsons. ' . , .: Prince v. Wylie.—The latter had no nope of beating his erstwhile skipper, who is not only playing in first-class form, but has a strong team in front of him. ; Keast A r . Wedderspoon.—A stubbornlyfought game, in Avhich the whole of the players did good .work. The only fault Avas Avhen at a critical stage Yu'ill put away a bowl on the Avrong bias. —Second Round.— » , CrcssAvell (Rangiora) ran clean away from Spiller (Sydenham). The surprise of this round was the defeat of Prince by Keast, the Newtown team scoring 8 in five heads. I: v Kaituna have strong combination and I play Avith confidence, but in his game against Parsons (St. Albans) Payne met his Waterloo, the St. Albans team leading from the start. Wedderspoon won easily from Wylie. —Third Round.— Payne’s game against Spiller was almost a ; Avalk-over. Prince- met Wedderspoon. but the Roslyn, team Avere never able to make headway, and Prince had an easy victory. :. Keast won bis game in the last five heads from Wylie. Cresswell had a narrow A’ictory over St. Albans. THE DAY’S RESULTS. The positions of the different rinks in each section at the close of the day’s play Avas ; —Section One.— , Wins. Losses.
