THE MELBOURNE CUP.
WON BY LORfi’ NOLAN. ' There was a record crowd at Flemington yesterday, and many thousands. were unable to find seating accommodation, despite the recent extensions made in this I direction. The weather turned out gloriously fine. The Governor-General (Lord, | Dudley) and party arrived before the first J race with the most gorgeous equipage seen since the inception of Federation, exciting admiration. So dense was the concourse during the Cup running that crowds were unable to see it. The following is a detailed account of the race: MELBOURNE CUP, of 5,000 sots and a Irophy valued at 100 sovs; second 1,000 sovs, and third 500 sovs. 2m. Mr J. Bobby, Peru, Jack Smith, and Baw Bee, on the nils, led the field from a good start. Jack Smith, on the inside, immediately took the lead from Alawa, King’s Gross, and Sir Aymer. Half a furlong had been covered when Dyed Garments fed and interfered with Post Town. Jack smith led at the distance by four lengths from Bobby, Parsee, Knox, Lady V dde, Alawa, Delaware, and Peru. Sweeping put at the turn, Jack Smith still held the lead, being six lengths ahead of Bobby, who was three in advance of Parsee, Lady Wilde, Delaware, Knox, Alawa, Bern Mooltan (on the outside), Tulkeroo, and Lord Nolan, with Emir last. At the bndge Tu keroo was lying a length away. At the abattoirs Jack Smith’s lead had been reduced to two lengths from Bobby, with Delaware, Lady Wilde, Peru, Knox Alawa, Lord Nolan, and Tulkeroo lying handy. Jack Smith, having made the pace a cracker, then retired, Delaware torgmg ahead from Lady Wilde, Peru, Welcome Inst, King’s Cross, and Alawa. Delaware led into the straight from Mooltan (on the rails), Lord Nolan, Alawa, and tulkeroo, who was coming very fast. Lord Nolan then made his run on the outside, racing with Delaware, Tulkeroo, and Mooltan Lord Nolan and Tulkeroo raced neck and neck up the straight, and Lord Nolan won by half a head, two and a-half lengths between second and third. Mooltan finished fourth, Alawa fifth, and Jack bmith and Emir last. Time, 3min 2d|sec. What the Jockeys Say.— Lewis, Alawa’s rider, said the favorite had a good easy run throughout. He thought he had a fine chance until heads were turned for home, when that was the end of him. Flynn who rode Lord Nolan, says he went out with the intention of hanging on to Parsee Mooltan. or Alawa. He got behind Mooltan, and stayed there for some time On turning for home he began to ride, and rode Lord Nolan the whole length of the straight. He thought iulkeroo would beat Lord Nolan, but, though tiring, the latter succeeded in lasting the journey. THE PLACED DIVISION.
