MINING.

River height this morning, sft lOin; weather very warm. A divdend of Is per share is payable to shareholders in the Worksop Company on Wednesday." £2OO has been placed to the reserve fund. During October the Rig, River Company put 470 tons of quartz through the battery for 6750z lOdwt of melted gold. Two hundred tons of tailings were cyanided for a return of 70oz. The total value of the bullion was £2,875. The Waikaia dredge-master reports for the week ended October 31 that the ground worked showed a poor carrying and a large amount of fine silt. The depth along the face, including the bottom, is unchanged, but during the last three days the ground has been inclined to get rougher and more solid. The width of the face is about 54 chains. The Blackwater River Company’s dredge was completely overhauled while she was stopped awaiting repairs to her crank shaft. The screen rollers and’all the gear were attended to, new corners were put in the elevator tumblers, and the trays were repaired. The save-all was rebuilt, the main bottom tumblers rebushed, as were also the ladder rollers and about half the buckets. The tail boxes were replated, and the deck was repaired. The boiler was cleaned, the pump repaired, atid numerous small items received attention; A start was made on the 24th, the crank shaft being placed in position. A wash-up was made on the 31st for 390z, the time worked being 200 hours. The ‘Lake'County Press’ reports that, in connection with the Wakatipu Prospecting Syndicate, close on £SOO has so far been subscribed, and portions of the district are yet to be canvassed. A general meeting of shareholders will bo held on November 7 to appoint a directorate and conduct other business. The master of the Central Charlton dredge considers • that last week’s return from section 2 was very satisfactory, as some time was lost repairing the pivot shaft. The Rising Sun dredge-master reports for the week ended October 31 Dredged 133 hours, and worked ahead 15ft on the usual width of cut (150 yds). The bottom worked was mostly clay right across the face. The machinery is running well. The Welcome Quartz Mining Company’s secretary reports that the cross-cut which is being driven to cut the reef is now in a distance of 40ft. The manager expects to cut the reef between 40ft and 50ft further on. Mr P. Morgan, of the Government geological staff, paid an unofficial visit of inspection to the property last week. During October the Waiotahi Gold Mining Company crushed and treated 109 tons of ore for a return of 2770z 17dwt of bullion, valued at £759 0s 4d. This shows a decrease compared with the return for September, when 223 tons yielded £BOB 18s 3d. The output for the corresponding month last year was £7,916 from 577 tons of ore, and 1271b of picked stone. The total won from the mine to date is £653,528. THE SHARE MARKET. DUNEDIN EXCHANOS. [From Our Own Correspondent.] The continued fine weather is keeping the river at an unusually low level for the time of year, the Kawarau being too low to allow the Electric No. 1 to be shifted down. On the Clutha, Shine No. 1, Rising Sun, and Riley’s Revival keep, up their steady returns. The latter dredge spent a couple of days shifting old tailings, so her return of 50oz was exceptionally good under the circumstances. The poor return'of Shine No. 2is accounted for by the fact of her taking out a corner to straighten the face, and only top gravel was dealt with, the gold bein<r very fine. 0 I understand that Shine No. 1 will be stopped this week for three days to execute some necessary repairs. • There is every prospect of the Riley’s Revival getting excellent returns for many years, as the rich run of gold she is at present on its being followed into ground the company has lately taken up. The returns from the Punt dredge do not improve to any appreciable extent. The privately-owned Excelsior dredge is being shifted higher up the river. She can only work shallow ground, and is the smallest dredge on the Clutha. The Clutha River dredges are working away steadily. The tributers have a very high bank of gravel to shift. The Cromwell Syndicate’s dredge, is steadily plugging away at the foot of Cornish Point, and is doing well.
