MR THOMSON'S CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—-In your issue of October 17 a| Wm. Thomson issued a challenge to th No-license Committee, Empire Buildingi .which I presume he does not intend t be limited to that Committee only. Th figures cited are alleged to prove thn "No-license is an absolute failure" j| the State of Maine, and that No-licenn produces drunkenness. I have alread' told Mr Thomson privately, and I do «' now publicly through your columns, tha I accept his offer and challenge. I be lieve I can prove that his figures an wrong, and that " No-license Is not i failure " in Maine, neither does it produq intemperance, nor is it the deadly enemi of temperance. * To say'that the State of Maine "is tk most drnnken State in the Union," aa) that No-lioense there creates hypocrite!} deceivers, and lowers the moral tone, g a slander on the State and her people. Inasmuch as Mr Thomson does not limi the time when this challenge and offer oi £I,OOO may be accepted, nor the timt when the contrary may be proven, thai this offer.of £I,OOO is sincere and noj merely a campaign bluff, I guarantee thai I will fulfil my part on or about sil months from date. Will Mr Thonisoi please answer within a week?—l am, etc, rt . , o- w - J- Hastie. October 2j. —[Advt.]
