THE WAIKAIA GELIGNITE ' EXPLOSION. [Per United Press Association.] GORE, August 15. At the inquest yestcrdav on Lindsay and Tognazzini, killed at Waikaia on the Stl; inst., evidence was given by W. P. Farly, the foreman that care had to be taken when firing He had warned the hands not to touch unexplcded gelignite, but. to fetch witness. , "■
J. J. Kennedy, a laborer, working wHh deceased's gang, said he heard Tognazzini e-ay " there was gelignite in one hole, and he would go for it early." Lindsay replied that he would take the gelignite out himself. Lindsny made three strokes with his pick, and the-third caused the explosion. The jury returned a verdict that Joseph Tognazzini and James Lindsay met their death accidentally by an explosion of gelignite at Muddy Terrace.
A local footballer while playing in a match here had his jawbone broken. He was attempting to collair an opponent round the ankles, with the result that the other player's knee struck him in tho face.— Timaru wire.
Edward Wilson, who was seriously injured at Khyber Pass on Tuesday, died at the Auckland Hospital yesterday. Wilson, who was by occupation a driver, was struck by a tramcar whilst he was emerging on to the Main road from an alley near the Captain Cook brewery. Ho was a widower, aged fieventy-four years. Charles Govejilock was drowned yesterday in a beat accident at Awakino (Tararald). Another man was rescued with difficulty.
At vho inquest en the body of Charles Davis, the fisherman who was lulled by a train .i.t Wellington, the evidence showed that ihe deceased, who wa6 a widower with_ no children, had been drinking heavily. The jury returned a verdict of '•Accidental death, no blame being attachable to the engine-driver or fireman." William Bird, twenty-eight years of age, was run over at Greymouth by a ballast train. He was taken to the hospital, where both lejs were amputated, but he died soon after. The deceased leaves a wife and two young children.
