There are 700 Republican delegates at the Chicago National Convention, pledged to support Mt Taft'e nomination for President. Senator Lodge was elected permanent chairman of the Convention. The Chairman, in his opening speech eulogising President Roosevelt's policy, and describing President Roosevelt as the best abused and most popular man in the United States, evoked a tremendous outburst of enthusiasm, lasting forty minutes There was also a demonstration in favor of renewing the President's term of office with insistent shouts of "Four years more." Senator Lodge, on resuming, declared that President Roosevelt's refusal to accept renomination was actuated by the loftiest motives and a notable loyalty to American tradition. The refusal was final and irrevocable. The cheering was renewed at this announcement. ■>
