WORK AND WAGES.
TRADES AND LABOR COUNCIL. The Council mot last evening. It was reported that a sum of £2l 10s 6d had been received from several of the local Unions in response to the appeal made by the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Laborer* Union for assistance towards defraying the expenditure in connection with tihe hearing of its 'dispute before the Canterbury Conciliaiion Board. A letter was received from the Empire Day Committee asking the co-operation of the Council in regard to the suggested substitution of Empire Day in place of June 3, Princo of Wales's Birthday, as a holiday.—The Council approved of the suggested alteration, and the president and secretary of the Council and Messrs J. R. Wilson and J. Roston were appointed to represent the Council on the Empire Day Committee. Tho following motion was passed : " That this Council place on record their aptweckiiion of tho services rendered to the cmuse of labor by Mr J. W. Munro during his many years' membership of the Bakers' Union and as a member of the Trades Council, and congratulates him on his success in breaking down the combination of the master bakers of Dunedin." Letters were received from the Minister of Labor in reply to a resolution passed by the Trades and Labor Council that inspectors of factories should be instructed to periodically visit each factory and shop and inspect the books of tho proprietor in order to see that tho provsions of the Factories Act and the Shops and Offices Act are being complied with.— The communications were referred to the Executive to report to next meeting. It was decided that a special meeting of the Council should be held on Thursday for the purpose of instructing delegates in what direction to vote on the various questions to be discussed at the conference of Trades Councils to open at Wellington on July 20. There is some uncertainty as to whether two of the local dologates appointed will be able to attend the conference, but if any vacancies occut they will be filled at the special meeting. Application wn6 made to tho Arbitration Court yesterday for enforcement against the Christrhurch Tramway B' ird in respect to the appointment of ticket inspectors from outside the ranks of the conductors and moiormen. The question as argued before the Court turned on the point, whether promotions had to be made from conductors or motormen only, or from the office staff also. Decision was reserved.
