SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

TAHUNA TROTS—TO-DAY. The Tahmua Park Trotting Club were favored with excellent weather for the openmg day of their winter meeting. There was a promising attendance. Seven bookmakers plied their calling, four inside and three outsido. Parker’s string band played in front of the stand. Mr JL* O. Bazlctt acted as and Mr W, J. Gore as judge, while the general arrangements were well looked after by Secretary H. L. James. Results Marram Pony Handicap, 30 sovs. lim.— Mr J. Steven’s Kilbirnie Maid, by Rothsduld—Ayrshire Lass, 18sec (E. MRewen), 1; Mr G. S. Wallace’* Punch, IBsec (owner), 2; Mr C. J. Meade’s Major Taylor, scratch (P. Parquharson), 3. Also sarted: Young Edith (2sec), Aquinas (Bsec), Neglected (20seo), Dayshift (20stc), Vixen (23sec). After going once round, Vixen led from Neglected and Punch, and when they passed the stand the second time, after going a mile, the order was: Kilbirme Maid, Punch, and Vixen in close order. Round the back Major Taylor passed Voung Edith (who started in slightly less favor than Ivilbirnie Maid), aiid was rapidly making up ground on the leaders when he broke, and though Parquharson got him going again, he could make no impression on tie leading pair, the favorite winning easily by about eight lengths from Punch, with Major Taylor three lengths further back, Dayshift fourth. Time, 4miu 12£seo. Trial Handicap, 50 sovs. lim.—Mr T. Walker’s Norma, by Spectator, 21sec (Owner), 1; Mrs J. Nieper’s Harold’s Childe, lOsoo (J. Richardson), 2; Mr T. M'Curdy’s Hindoo scratch (J. Norma maintained a place at the head, trotting apparently well within himself. He lead at a mile from Survived and Punch, with Gedarwood, Bermaline, and Miss Agnew next. Round the back of the course Harold’s Childe set off after the leader, cutting down the field in rare fashion, but ho failed to catch Norma, though a break by the latter in the straight lost him a couple of lengths. Norma, a rank outsider, finally won by four lengths, Hindoo, who came fast at the finish, just beating Gedarwood (the favorite) for third place, sis lengths behind Harold’s Childe. Time, 4min 9?sec. The Pigeon, who was favorite, set off at a great pace, and after going a mile had overtaken all but First Pet Esina, and Puzzle, who passed the stand in that order the second time round, Henry M. pulling up hopelessly out of it. After going a mile and a-balf, First Pet led by half a dozen lengths from Esma, with The Pigeon a dozen lengths further back. The Pigeon had shot her bolt, and died away round the back, Esma meanwhile steadily lessoning the gap between her and First Pet. An exciting struggle between the pair down the straight resulted in Esma, beautifully ridden by M'Laren, getting on terms a few yards from homo and winning by a head. Puzzle was about fifteen lengths away; The Pigeon fourth. Time, 4min 59|sec. St. Handicap, 50 sovs. 2(m. —Mr R. Jopp’s Romney, by Design, 33seo (E. M'Kewcn), 1; Mr D. Clarke’s Imagination, 36seo (M.
