The Frozen Meat Trade Association's Smithfield market quotations for the under-mentioned classes of frozen meats are based on actual sales of not less than 100 carcasses of mutton or lamb, and on twenty-five carcasses of beef of fair average quality. These quotations are not for selected lines, but for parcels that are fairly representative of the bulk of the shipments now on the market. There was not a great deal of business doing in the local market last week. Prices all round are somewhat higher. Holders of wheat are not disposed to sell at current rates, and talk of getting 5s ultimately. Purchases were made a few days ago at 4s 4d and 4s net at country stations, a mixed line of 700 sacks having been secured at the lower figure, but since then 4s 6d at country stations both subject to commission and net cash. The chief transaction was one comprising 680 sacks of velvet and Tuscan, nearly all the former, at 4s 6d net, on trucks. There is a wide divergence of views as to values, buyers fixing them at 4s 4£d to 4s 5d net at country stations, but few sellers can be found at 4s 6<L Oats have hardened a halfpenny. Some small lots of good feed Gartons "were obtained during the week at from 2s 2d to 2s 3d, and a seed parcel at 2s 3£d, all net at country stations, but on Saturday a line of 700 sacks was taken at 2s 4d net at a country station. Some shipping business has been done in oats at 2s 7d, f.0.b., sacks in. A line of 340 sacks of medium quality malting barley was placed at ss, ex store. For cocksfoot 6d and 6£d net has been given at a country riding for a fair quantity, the higher rate being for seed dressed by farmers. There is a fair inquiry for potatoes for shipment to the North Island, and business has been done at £4 15s, f.0.b., for Derwents, and at from £4 10s to £4 12s 6d for other sorts. Merchants' purchases from growers have been at £4 for Up-to-Dates, and at from £4 to £4 5s for Derwents, all not cash at country stations.
