CHURCH CONCERT. The second of a series of concerts arranged by the First Church Young Women's Club,'for the purpose of raising funds with which to equip the gymnasium that is to occupy the ground floor of the new Bums Halt, was held last evening. 'A number of members of the Shakespeare Club kindly consented to read extracts from Shakespeare's works. ''The first extract was from ' The Merchant of Venice,' and the following took part:—Miss D. Gard'ner | Portia). Miss E. Roberts (Nerissa), Mr T. W. Whitson (Duke), Mr C. E. Davey (Antonio), Mr F. V. Blandford (Basaanio), Mr L. T. Barnard (Gratiano), Mr S. H. Osbom (Shylock).. In 'Macbeth' Mr A. C. Hanlon took the name part and Mies E. Ford read intelligently the lines of ' Lady Macbeth.' The third reading was from 'The Taming of the Shrew,' for which the characters were allotted thus: Miss Ina Whitson: Bapfcista, Mr C. E. Davey; Gremio, Mr T. W. Whitson; Tranio, Mr L. T. Burnard; BiondeUo, Mr F. V. Blandford; Petruoluo, Mr A. C. Hanlon. The readings were interpreted carefully and with vigor, and were greatly enjoyed. The remainder of the programme was made np as follows : —Mesdames J. Glover, H. jun., A. Binnie, and Fyfa (songs), Messrs J. Armstrong, J. MacGeorge, W. H. Hale, and T. Searie (quartets), and Messrs W. M*Lecman and W. T. Brtmdell (clarionet duet).
ST. PETER'S. The annual entertainment in oonnectkm with St Peter's Sunday School, Cargill reed, wjts held in the schoolroom last evenin c Pianoforte duets were rendered by the Misses N. and H Osmond and Miss Bertha Bilker and Master Cyril Caldwell. Several clever action- songs were given by the Sunday school scboJsrs under the 6kilful direction of Miss Sims and Miss Taylor. Miss G Leylands darwed a Highland fling in her usual lithesome style, Mr M*KechßJe kindly providiiig tho bagpipe music. Miss B. Johnstone danced a skirt, dance in a very graceful manner; a mystifying exhibition of mind-reading wa* given by Mr G. C. Uaker r—y cleverly, assisted by Miss Sims; recitations were given by Miss Vera. Rogers and Master V. Fleet; eoJos were given by Mis 3 E. Brady and Master H. Ingram; cvnets for violin and piccolo were skilfully played by the Masters Ferguson. Miss Taylor and M.'ss Hantarm acted as accompanists. Teh Rev. V. G. Brym King apologised for tho absence of the "Rev. Canon King, who is in ill-health There was a splendid attendance, and the whole entertainment reflected gr«wt credit on all those respansSble. A substantial sum will be available for the Sunday school prizes.
