[Per United Press Associaijow.] AUCKLAND, Juno 12. Jolm Soloman Taylor was retried on a charge of wilfully poisoning a horse at Hamilton. The jury had disagreed when accused came before the Court a fortnight ago. lie evidence was to the effect that a gelding owned by Alfred Jolm Seoxle, boarding-house keeper, became) ill, and accused, who lived with Soarle, went to a ■chemist for a drench. He inquired of an assistant how much! arsenic it would take to knock over a horse, and on the same night ho purchased four ounces of poison from another chemist. The horse died the next day, and it was found that death was due to arsenical poisoning. The accused’s explanation of his purchase was that he bought the arsenic to kill Tats at Scarlet's house. Ho was found guilty, and was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. Juno 13. The charge of manslaughter against Eliza Davis in connection with the death of an infant taken for adoption was heard at the Supreme Court to-day. The jury, upon the suggestion of Mr Justice Denniston, acquitted the accused before the case for the defence was concluded. His Honor stating that it was impossible to find that death was due to starvation, aa alleged, in view of the medical testimony. Mr Justice Denniston declared that the system of adopting infants •in response to advertisements, and offering small premiums, should be made absolutely illegal, because under such circumstances it wag to the interests of the person taking the child that the sooner it died the better. PALMERSTON NORTH, Juno 12. Patrick Brosnaghan, found guilty on a charge of false pretences, was sentenced to sis months’ imprisonment. A case of indecent assault was adjourned till tie next sitting in September owing to the principal witness having measles. Charles Duncan pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting and robbing F. N. Bovins of £l6 16s and a gold watch at Dannevirke om April 5. He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment Luther Martin Murray, charged with being anaccomplioc in the same offence, pleaded not guilty, and was acquitted. BLENHEIM, June 15.
