OUR WATER SURREY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —At tho annu.ii dumer of the officers of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Melbourne the engineer-in-chief of the Board of TV ark,- (Mr Thwaites), in replying to tho toast of " Tho Board,” said that the ire ter supply of Melbourne was a good one for domestic purposes, but it was hid foi lire extinction. Tho mains had been laid down in the year 1854 to supply a citj of 100,000 inhabitants. Kow it served an area as big as London. If tho Prcstoi reservoir were in Spring street, and a big fixo broke out in Bourke street, there woule not be enough water to cope with it. foi the mains were too small. They had been laid to deal with fires in one or . .vostcreyed buildings. Mutatis mutandis Trill not these remarks equally apply to the City of Dunedin? What is the size of the mains on tho reclaimed ground? and have ■we sufficient storage for domestic use, plus fires, motive power, and drainage? Over and over again examining experts sav we have not. —1 am, etc., P.M. March 2.
