PICNICS.

Messrs Michaelis, Hallensteiu, and Farquhar treated their warehouse and tannery employees to their annual outing on Saturday. The party, numbering about 175, journeyed to Waitati by special train, and spent a most enjoyable time. Swinging, skipping, and various games filled in the earlier portion of the day. Sports were held during the afternoon, some of them causing great amusement, especially the Married Ladies’ Nail-driving Competition, Cutting the Turk’s Head (for men' over forty years), and the Blindfold Walking Race. The following aro the prize-win-ners : —Boys under twelve years—Harold Manson 1, Percy Austin 2. Girls under twelve years—Florrie Pratley 1, Dorothy Perry 2. Frew 3. At the conclusion of the sports Mrs Cleghorn dispensed toys and bags of lollies to tho children, and handed the prizes to the winners. Mr Chisholm (chairman of Committee) also spoke, concluding by calling for three cheers for the firm, which were heartily given. The employees and friends of the firm of Messrs Powley and Keast held their inaugural picnic on Saturday at Stewart’s Gully. The party, numbering 200, were conveyed in drags and traps. Too much credit cannot be given to Messrs Doyle and Borne (secretaries) for tho manner in which they made the picnic the success that it was. Messrs Powley and Keast did everything that was possible to ensure the enjoyment of all present. Side games of every description were indulged in, to the enjoyment of both old and young. After being photographed the party made a start for town, which was reached at 8.30, when three hearty cheers were given for the firm. The events resulted thus : —P. and K. Handicap—first heat, J. Turner 1, K. Skew 2, W. Doyle 3 ; second heat, J. Stevenson 1, J. Woods 2, C. Keamitz 3; final, J. Tumor 1, J. Woods 2, J. Stevenson 3. Single Ladies (long dresses) —Miss J. Sheridan 1, Miss E. Wood 2. Married Men’s Race— Ned Cuckoo 1, J. Turner 2, W. Doyle 3. Single Ladies (short dresses—Miss D. Little 1, Miss M. Keast 2. Single Men’s Race—D. Thomson 1, K. Skow 2, J. Stevenson 3. Married Ladies’ Race—Airs AI. H. ‘ Harvey 1, Airs A. Knowles 2, Mrs H. Turner, sen., 3. Visitors’ Race —J. Haigh I, T. Hoaro 2, A. Keast 3. Boys’ Race— G. Leadin 1, J. Powley 2, R. Larsen 3. The annual picnic of the Otago and Southland Operative Tailors and Shop Tailoresses’ Union was held at Evansdale on Saturday. The party numbered about 200. Every sports item was keenly contested. The following comprised the Committee : —Messrs Pudney (president), J. Cherrie, J. Morrison, A. Galloway, Stevenson, Liliolia, S. J. Lyon, J. Brown, J. Alurray, and R. C. Wilson (secretary), all of whom worked well to make the outing a success. The following are tho winners : Apprentices’ Handicap, 150 yards—Frank Perkins 1, Fred Burgess 2. Tailors’ Handicap, 220 yards—J. Brown 1, J. APCrae 2, S. Pudney 3. Young Ladies under fifteen years—Alary O’Brien 1, Nellie Wilson 2, Nellie Cherrie and Ethel Perkins 3. Young Ladies (short skirts) —Miss C. AXorrison 1, Aliss Nellie Wilson 2, Aliss J. Paterson 3. Tailoresses (members of the union)— This event was ran in two heats : First heat, Aliss N. Bain 1, Miss Tudor 2, Aliss Cjowther 3; second heat, Aliss G. Donald 1, Miss E. Anderson 2, Aliss Prentice 5; final, Miss Bain 1, Miss Q. Donald 2, Aliss Prentice 3. Boys under fifteen years—AL O’Brien 1, P. Dixon 2, P. Perkins 3. Alarmed Ladies—Airs Richardson 1, Airs Bills 2, Airs Cameron 3, Airs Pudney 4 (Airs Richardson and Airs Bills ran a dead-heat, end in tho ;un-off the former won). Girls under twelve years—E. Perkins 1, AI. O’Brien 2, Nellie Cherrie 3. Old Buffers— J. Alorrison 1, Gillespie and Lyon 2. Boys under twelve—J. Alorrison 1, G. Gibson 2, J. Courts 3. Ladies (open)—Aliss Sin clair 1, Miss Coombs 2, Aliss Tudor 3. Open Handicap, 150 yards—J. F. Smail 1, S;. Pudney 2, J. MUrae 3. At the conclusion of the sports the prizes were presented by the president (Air Pudney), and a vote of thanks was passed to the master tailors and others who had donated prizes.
