The Rev. E. H. Hobday, from England, thfc new minister for the Mosgicl Baptist Church, will be welcomed by the congregation on- Wednesday next. Mr Justice Sim, President of tho Arbitration Court, will be congratulated by the legal profession on his elevation to the Bench at the sitting of the Court on Monday next.
Mr G. R. Joyce, who has filled the position of printing manager and publisher of the ‘ Southland Times ’ for tho last twentyfive years, has beers appointed manager of the ‘ Timaru Post. ’
Mr G. 0. Baker has been temporarily appointed hon. secretary of the Dunedin and Suburban School Committees’ Association, vice Mr G. C. Thomson, resigned. Mr J. B. Taverner will bo a candidate for the representation of South Ward in the City Council. I’he mayor, Mr G. Lawrence, whose health has been poorly lately, is at present recouping at Queenstown. He will probably be away from Dunedin for a week.
Messrs C. Rattray, Leslie Wilson, and R. S. Rankin, (of Neill and Co. Limited) are about to' pay a visit to the old Country. This afternoon, at the Forbury School, South Dunedin, Miss Cooper, who has been promoted to the mafronship of the St. Clair School, was presented by her follow teachers with a set of silvermounted toilet requisites. Mr Whetter, the head-master, when making the presentation,' referred to the feeling that had always existed between Miss Cooper and the other members of the staff, and at the same time complimented her on the excellent work she had done in the school. Mr Steel, the secretary of the School Committee, also spolJe in complimentary terms of the manner in which she had carried out her duties. The Prince Fushimi, who was mentioned in tho cables yesterday as leaving Japan on a special mission to England, hj a naval officer of high rank. He went through the recent war with Russia, and during the naval battle on August 10, in which Admiral Vitoft was killed, ho commanded the forward barbette of the Japanese flagship Mikasa. On that occasion the barbette was struck fairly by a 12in shell, which jammed the turntables, besides knocking over ten men and severely wounding Prince Fushimi. Lieutenant-colonel Collinjj, who was recently appointed financial member of the newlj'-coiLstituted Council of Defence, resigns the command of the AVcllington Rifle Battalion, a- position he assumed in 1859, Major Brandon will succeed him.
