.MAIL STEAMER ACCOMMODATION AT ADELAIDE.
Ttiie South. Aiistra.Ka.ri Gov-crnm&nfc have cominnnicatcd with the P. and O. and tho Orient Companies to tho effect that work at the Outer Harbor (Adelaide) will be sufficiently advanced at the beginning of July to permit, of vessels being moored to the" wharf, and asking if arrangements could be made for a mail steamer to be taken into the harbor at that time. It is stated that it would be agreeable if tho first vessel to makr use of tho accommodation should be British-owned. It is proposed, if arrangements can be mado for the mail steamers to go to the Outer Harbor as asked in Julv, to run tho passengers to the city by rail free of charge. DECK SHELTERS. The North German Lloyd have just adopted for their express steamers an ingenious invention, by means of which any number of substantial wind shelters can be provided on deck at a few minutes' notice, an addition to passengers' comfort v-hieh is certain to be .narpreciated. One of tbo first things a traveller gises his attention to on aiiTiving on board is to see Jo the position of his chair on deck. Tho coiifiETuraitkm of the deckbousesisgonocally modified with the view of providing one or two cosy recesses. Those faarored positions, however, ane necessarily few, and tho majority of tlw nassengers have to incur the full blast of the wind, which, with. steameiß going a-spoed of over-fcwenty knots. necessitates a pood deal of wrapping up. By means of this invention the number of ocey corners is practically unlimited, and this immense- increase in comfort is provided without in any way permanentaV encumbering the deck, for when not in use. the shelter is stowed away -with the greatest facility, whfle remaining noJv for nse a<t a moment-'s notice. The arranaement chiefly consiets in providing removTsble transverse walls, which may be conveniently placed between one deck —sny ibo promenade deck—and the transverse girders or beams of the deck above it.
