Word has bean received by the Union Company that their Calcntta steamer Aparima arrived at Auckland this morning. Her arrival here is looked for in about ten days' time, and she will Kill at Wellington, Lyttelton, and Timaru en route. After discharge here she proceeds to Newcastle, to load coal for Singapore and Calcutta. A very fine cargo boat is the Pathao, whose charter to load in New Zealand for tho Shaw-Savill Company was announced recently. She was built at Middlesboro in" 1905. and is therefore a new ship. Her principal measurements are 360 ft by 50ft by 20ft. and her gross register is 4,956 tons. Word received by the National Mortgage and Agency Company states that she will leave Sydney on the 16th inst.. and will load entirely in the North Island, sailing finally from Wellington on January 31. Her loading will be wool and " general." There must be a good many people in Dunedin who have friends on the Ranpitira, for inquiries as to how she is faring after her break-down are numerous. The best news about her to date is that she will probably reach Sydney any day now. Her shaft -will be repaired there, and it is hoped that she will be in New Zealand •waters for Home loading about the end of this month. The Shaw-SaviTl steamer Wsiwera. win lie here for the next wool sales about January 23, and wUI sail finailv from Lvttettan on the 30th. An investigation of the names on a recent passenger list of a prominent Ameri-;-.:n steamship Baiiimj from England to New York contained some amusing examples of nomenclature. For instance, there wwe Mrs Sprout, Mrs Bud, and Mrs Blossom; Mrs Moss, Mr Bush. Mrs Branch. Mrs Wood, and Mr Forrest. In view of these, it was certainly appropriate that tho passengers included Gardner and Wells and Pond. The presence of Frost seemed at first sght ominous, bnt the prospect brightened wben it was discovered that there was on board a family of CoalesThe Hinemoa left for Cape Saunders lighthouse to-day, and will return here in tb« evening. This morning- she shipped a quantity of bricks and building material for thelrgbtkeeper's residence at the Nuggets, and also for repairs at Taiaroa Head. The Hauroto, from Fiji via Wellington ■ and Lyttelton, is expected at Dunedin to- • morrow forenoon. An unusual charge, said to be the first of its kind ever tried in Sydney, was dealt with by Mr Smithers, S.M., at the Central Police Court recently, when Joseph Pattenden, "a person not subject to tho Naval Discipline Act," was charged with having employed Charles Nixon, a person subject to the Aot, who was alleged to have deserted from H.M.S. Challenger at Sydney on August 16. 1905. Pattcnden. while so employing Nixon, knowing him tn be a deserter. After hearing evidence the magistrate inflicted a fine of £2. with the alternative, of seven days* hard labor. The Warrimoo steamed down from Dunedin this forenoon, and discharged 650 sacks bark, and sailed in tho afternoon for Sydney via Cook Strait. Special blocks are bona laid in the graving dock for the dredge 222, which will be jfloated in to-morrow forenoon. The Inwercargill took on board transhipments ex Everton Grange at the Bowen pier this afteraoon. "TTIE SEASON" AND SHIPPING. The present season is evidently a reI markafaly early one, judging by the man'ner in which cargoes are coming forward. The busiest part of the shipping season is generalrv from December 1 to January 31, and an index of the present state of things is to be found by comparing the number of despatches of any of tho leading lines for this vear with thoas of previous years. The figures of tho Shaw-SavM Company for four years back are as follow :—R>r r 3903-4, four steamers; for 1904-5, seven ! steamers; for 1905-6, five steamers; for J1906-7, ten steamers, aP full. As as two can judge, tho despatches of the N<«r Zealand Shipping Company shear a proper--)

A WAY THEY HAVE. During the time of the shipping war a good deal was said -as to tho desire of certain lines to do their utmost for New Zealand shippers. Bat it seems that this love for the poor shipper varies as freights vary, and when freights are high in Australia the New Zealand shipper becomes a less desirable client than of yore. Lately wool freights in Australia have been as high as 9-16 d, and in one case 10-16 d, as against id in New Zealand. This has not been without its effect, it seems. Just now the F.H.S. steamers arc off to Australia with great numeronsness. ' SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. AUCKLAND.
