STATISTICIANS’ CONFERENCE.
Nothing has yet been reported publicly about the recent conference of State staticsticians at Melbourne, and details -will not lie available till the resolutions adopted have- been considered by the (lovernmcnts concerned.
Mr K. Ynn Dad'!.-r.cn. Now Zealand’s Registrar-General, who attended the conference by invitation, explains that- the federal Government. by appointing Mr George Nibhs their statistician, took the first practical step tow-aids undertaking the preparation of statistics and census for the whole of the Commonwealth States, in accordance with the provisions of the Federation Art. As a sequel to this appointment it was iouiid desirable that there should bo a conference of State statisticians, with Mr XibC, ;t,s chairman, to emu-ider’ methods of proceiiure until the new regime. Rasolutions will he submitted to the various Governments shortly, and in the meantime there are no report, for publication, i’i,o conference generally ami Che relations between all the representatives were of tile most cordial nature.” states Mr V r on Dadeisv.cn. " The proceedings will not necessarily involve any dtsturl>anc« of the Slate statisticians. As New Zealand does net belong to tint Commonwealth, this colony is not directly interested in the rolaici'n of tile Australian Stale statisticians ; but for tile purpose of enabling information about the whole group to be given in one .work on uniform linos it is hoped that t.iu-ic will W no difficulty in the matter of assisting -Mr Nibbs iu bis proposals.”
