HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION.
THE MINISTER'S VIEWS. WELLINGTON. January 7. Speaking of the unification of the "Public Health Department and the hospitals of the colony, tha Minister of Public Health (Mr FotrkU) said he wis a strong believer in local administration so far as the hospHaks -were concerned, and against centralisation, though he- thought that as Government provided a largo proportion of the total cost of the upkeep they should havo a little more control than at present. The Minister intimated that ho was looking out for a site [or a central mental hospital in the North Island, which would relieve Mount View Hospital. Wellington. All the mental hospitals were practically full, and it would bo better to establish a central institution than extend tho existing institutions.
The Government propose making provision for the establishment of receiving institutions in each of the four centres, wbero persons in incipient stages of insanity can go, either voluntarily or be committed, for observation and special treatment. In these the patients will receive more individual treatment than is now possible in the large mental hospitals, which will be an important factor in effecting euros.
