BOWLING

■ OPENING OF OTAGO GREEN. Twelve months ago there was in the neighborhood of Arthur street a gully into which the neighborhood used to toss its respective dead eat and its depleted jam tin. To-day that gully is hidden under ;i« neat a little bowling green as there is in Dunedin. It is new yet (the green), but it is far from being correspondingly nasty. It- took a lot of labor and a lot of money to make all those blades of grass growwhere docks grew before, and the immediate provider of tliese things was Mr W. Dawson, to whom a crowd of zealous bowlers arc duly grateful- After the idea of making a green in the gully was first formed, it was decided to canvas the district and get money. The canvas brought costly disappointment, and tha't was where Mr Dawson came in. He found the money and made the green, and built the best pavilion in Dunedin, if not in the colony, and let the Otago Bowling Club (then formed) have both on terms about which members seem guile enthusiastic. Under ■ the centre of the green there is about 13ft of filling, and the fact tiat the rinks are as true as new-made rinks usually arc is evidence that the filling was well done The height of the banks gives some idea of the amount of eutting and shaping that had to be done to make the place presentable. So that it might be used early, the green was turfed and not sown, and the result is altogether satisfactory. The pavilion, as lias been indicated, is something out of the common. It is a two-storey brick building, solid and spacious, with a big social hall, a balcony, and a variety of handy rooms and conveniences. When the filling of the gully was in hand a number of springs were lound. The water of one of them has been analysed and pronounced pure, and it will be laid on to the pavilion shortly, which will be variously convenient. Altogether it is safe to apply to the advantages of the Otago Bowling Club that much over-worked word " unique." On Saturday afternoon, as we have already mentioned, the green was officially opened.- The weather behaved well, and the function went off pfeasantiy to the music of the Garrison Band. Round about the green there were numerous ladies who looked on and sipped tea, while various bowlers from different clubs rolledfor the jack and talked tlie language of the' rink. Mr Dawson, in opening the proceedings and the green, welcomed die visitors, especially the ladies, and said he hoped _tbe green would be, the means of giving enjoyment to bowlers for many years. While mentioning that they were indebted to the City Corporation for..; permission to plant shrub*.' ct'cf, along the neighboring street

would soon come when wo should have municipally-aided bowling greens on the public reserves.—{Applause.} Mr Daweon was cheered and honored by 'Jolly good fpllows.' . Mr W. C. AEuutt, on behalf of the New Zealand Bowling Association, offered his congratulations to the club and Mr Daweon. Names that stood out prominently in the annals of bowling' were James Speight, Charles Grecnslade, and William Dawson, and to the last mentioned ho spociafly directed his remarks, expressing hi 6 "confidence in Mr Dawson's goodness of heart and capacity for pleasure in the enjoyment of others.^Applause.) Congrafculaiory remarks were also made by Mr X. Young (on behalf of the Dunedin Club), Mr W, Thompson (for the Kaituna Club), and Mr A. C. Alcock (for the Roslvn Club). Miss Daweon then rolled up the first howl, and the usual match v. Vice-president was played, the president winning by 2 points.
