To-morrow at tho Caledonian Ground the athletic championships, band, and naval display and children’s demonstration will take place. There are four great attractions in one. Firstly, the musical public will have the pleasure of listening to popular selections by Dunedin’s five leading bands —Navals’, Citizens’, Alornington, Knikorai, and Garrison. Tbs display of cutlass drill by a detachment from H.M.S. Pioneer, under the direction of Chief Pctty-officer Sly field, is causing much interest in naval circles, and this display will appeal to the popular fancy. A general half-holiday is to bo observed on tiro warship to-morrow, and First-lien-tenant Bainbridge has promised that all the men who can be snared will attend the sports. The Management Committee have added a race —once round the ring—for tho Jack Tars, who have several wonderful sprinters in their ranks. Tho third attraction is the display of physical drill by cadets and physical exercises by girls. Both displays will nrove very enjoyable and interesting. The remaining attraction is the athletic programme, and it is really to encourage and create an interest in a clean and healthy sport that to-mor-row’s gathering is to be held. In all, nearly 1,000 entries have been received, a ■result highly gratifying. School children ■will compete in running, jumping, walking, ■hurdling, and tho presence of the children •will draw a large attendance. Probably no better racing has been scon this season than that promised in the open events. The competitors in the 220 yds, half-mile, 120 yds hurdles, and teams’ relay races include the finest of Dunedin’s runners, and in athletic circles these events aro creating a keen amount of interest. The sports start at 12.30 and finish at 5.10. The display of cutlass drill will take place at four o’ch'ck. Tho meeting is certain to be a conspicuous success from every point of view should the weather hold up.
