ROBBERY OF £I.OOO ON A STEAMER. AUCKLAND, November 8. On the voyage of tho s..s. N avua, between Lanloka, Fiji, and Suva, it was discovered that tho steamer’s safe had been broken open and robbed of £I,OOO in cash. On arrival h<r*rc ibe polico were commnnjca.t<?d with, and they searched tlie steamer. They also examined the officers and passengers. It is understood that the affair so far is a complete mystery, and the utmost reticence in regard to it is observed. The volcano on Tnfua Island, seventy miles from Tonga, was in active eruption on October 25. There arc three new cones on the top of, the crater. The discharging of lava goes on with groat noise, and -the lava streams are flowing into a lake formed of the old crater. Later. Tho safe on the steamer Xavua was opened with a hey and locked again prior to the discovery of the theft. It contained a thousand sovereigns, also ■ four boxes of silver coin. The gold has disappeared. leaving no trace, but the silver was untouched. Such large sums of money arc earned for trading pjupwea.
