TO ITIK. KIIITOK. Sir.—During this and the lost- week t-ne dust fiend lias been playing up “high jinks” in the lower parts of the City, ir.-.ro especially in Cumberland and Crawford street?. It has been so bad that it is with difficulty at times to see any further ahead than 50yds. It is well enough known that the Corporation watur-carts cant he everywhere when a storm of dust takes pos?e?sion of ihe.w street?. Rut where it can be minimised to a great extent is to knock otf the new or nnpateiitcd process o. caning and the laying on of clay and other soft- muck in- ?!>oil. Hundreds'of loads of these mixtures arc put on the top of the new-iaid ni.-ial. aiU’r whicii the w,*tercarts 'go over it, even if it is ruining vorv liard. to make, a softening mixture, in‘rnii"-v for ike steam roller to press {ho two together. The result is that wc have the streets operated upon giving either a .surplus of siu?h or a storm of dust. The road? in the country are laid down in t'-e ohl-fashioncd or macadamised style, and do not give one-half the trouble those do that are iormotl under th? method adopted.hv the City Corporation, who, presumably. 'have the approval ot the acting eitv engint-er. 1 am, etc., - Mw.-rtiA. November 7.
