Steam Navigation Company find it becoming increasingly difficult to obtain officers for their vessels. One reason assigned is that the average officer does not hanker after a. berth in the Indian trade; another reason adduced being tho comparatively small pay given to jmaior officers as compared with that received by captains. The same arguments apply, only with less force, in other waters, and it is contended that wages will have to be maiterially increased a few years hence if young men are to be induced to become officers. The examinations to be passed by the latter are now so stiff that many yoang men who are capable of pgesing are persuaded that tlieir talents will be better rewarded by service on shore.
