STATE COAL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Many thanka to " One Who Knows " for information supplied by him in this' evening's issue of your paper under the above heading. From this it will be seen that, the reason State coal is 5s per ton cheaper in Christchurch than in Dunedin is owing to the Mines Department not paying harbor dues, transhipment, or tunnel charges, and paving less freight. This means these charges fall on the people of the colony, and b the best .reason that can be adduced for the immediate establishment of a State depot in Dunedin, so that we consumers may reap the benefit of the lower prices for which we afsist to pay.—l am, etc., F.X. September 26.
