CITY CORPORATION SALARIES.

TO THE XDITOB. Sir,—lt is recommended by the Works Committee of the City Council that an, increase of salaries i>e made to the three maintenance inspectors from £l6O to £175 per ajinum. As ;i rule, the salaries of tlte employees i.re overhauled once every year, and why tho Committee should bo in such a hurry to give the inspectors nn increase when it « only about twelve months ehvee they were appointed is a puzzle to me. There were a number of competent applicants for the £l6O "billets," who would only be too glad to tako the positions at that rate. lam a strict believer i:t giving a fair and living wage or salary io everyone, but so far eg I have seen or noticed the Corporation have peculiar methods in ladling »mt the golden metal. It would be interesting to know the number of workmen the different inspectors have to look after. Perhaps some councillor will ask the question at to-night's meeting, so as to enlighten the ratepayers as to the justification or otherwise of the proposed recommendation. Those who have to take their coats off have a tough job to get even a " rise" of 3d a day. It is not eo very long ago that about a dozen men were dispensed with on the plea of the Corporation being hard up, caused, no doubt, through tho reorganising and substantial additions made to the salaries of the clerical department.—l am, etc., Sandt.
