INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL MANAGEMENT.

Giving evidence yesterday at Christchtlrch at the inquiry into the conduct ofthe Burnham Industrial School, Mr Hardy, M.H.R., said he had visited the school for many years, often-iinexpectedly. He had seen the boys under all conditions, and he considered., the manager an excellent man for the work. He thought the detention yard a useful adjunct to the school for dealing with refractory boys. The isolation of Burnham was an assistance in keeping the boys away from sentimental philanthropists. To remove the bad boys from Burnham and make some improvements in the conditions would furnish one solution of the problem of how to deal with tho institution. Very little expenditure would ma-ke the building efficient. and the boys could be used to do it. Witness thought a. special reformatory better for incorrigibles than a training ship.
