WORKMEN'S HOMES.

WELLINGTON, August 27. Representations have been made to the Minister of Labor regarding the system under which workmen's homes are to be balloted for. It was pointed out thai applicants have to pay a month's rent, and one guinea as a registration fee, before they can have a chance in the ballot. The Minister has replied that he had not had time to go into the regulations. Some check was required to prevent gambling, but personally he thought it was time enough to ask for rent, when the man had got his house, and if it were necessary to charge a guinea for it, it should be spread over a period. Tho Government had no desire to make money out of the scheme, but it must be put on a self-supporting basis.
