A.curious story has been' related by, some of the passengers who recently crossed the Atlantic in the steamship America. It appears that ;l‘ certain, gang of alleged sharpers played for high stakes, and mulcted several victims, until two passengers, refused to pay what they considered to.be the result of a direct swindle. ' The amount in dispute was £9OO. A melee ensued, in which the members of the gang pulled out revolvers, and a scone of the greatest excitement followed. Ladies swooned, while shots were freely .exchanged, the riot being quelled for the time by the armed intervention of the captain and officers.
