The prospective householder paid a deposit, land was secured, and a house erected according to plans prepared by the owner of the system and under his supervision. The combination of the role of land agent, architect, contractor, and some times financier required a genius if success all round was to be achieved. Unfortunately it was not. While a number of houses were still building the “ system ” collapsed, ahd some three months ago the originator disappeared. In many cases the mortgagees, who held the buildings as security for money advanced, stepped forward arid finished them, but in a few cases depositors were left houseless and in somewhat of a hole, while timber merchants', hardware merchants, etc., had also cause to lament. As far as can be traced, the collapse of the “ system !1 was due to insufficient capital arid inexperience as regards buildings in course of erection. Affairs are how being fixed up, a friend having come forward with an offer of payment of 5s iii the £ to unsecured creditors, of whom there are eighty-two, and whose claims amount to £1,522 10s 7d.
