On Tn&sday afternoon a pleasing function look place at the PortobeUo School on the occasion of Miss Crawley’s departure to take np a position in the Albany street School. Notwithstanding the Wretched weather, a, goodly number of and others assembled to wish Mies Crawley good-bye and to express Heir regret at her departure. The School Committee were represented by Mr D. D. Seaton (chairman) and Messrs Dickson, Leslie, and Wintoh. Among others present were Mr Crawley and the late head-master (Mr Barton). Eulogistic speeches in honor of the departing teacher were made by the chairman, the members of .the School Committee, Mr Fergus (the present head-master), and Mr Barton. 'Die chairman then presented Miss Crawley with a gold watch and a book, as a slight token of the respect and affection in Which she was held by the children of the school of which she had Men mistress for nearly three years. On behalf of his daughter, Mr Crawley feelingly returned thanks. Detective Cooney, who has recovered from a rather serious illness, hag resumed duty. Mr Donald M'Lennan, who was a member of the Land Commission of last year, died at his residence, Eakanui, this morning. Ho had been seriously ill for some time. Mr M'Lennan was at one time vice-president of the Dunedin Gaelic Society, and was also a vice-president of the Waitaki Gaelic Society, whose headquarters are at Kurow. He had been a resident of the Kakanul district for over thirty years, and took a great interest in agricultural matters. The death occurred at Horse wood on Thursday last of the Rev. Otter Ghristofferson. The deceased was (says the ‘Dannevirke Advocate’) an ordained ipthister of the Methodist body, and had Men a resident of this colony for sotne thirtyfour years, during which he held stations at Palmerston North, Maurieeville, Makaretu, and Norsewood. Prior to coming to NeW Zealand the deceased gentleman Was attached in Norway to the Lutheran Church, and later .he was a member of the Episcopal Methodist Church of America for a year or so, the fetal term of his ministry numbering forty years.
