A young man named M'Leod, who was laying odds on the flat at Flemington, is alleged to have tried to get away without paying up on the Steeplechase. The maddened crowd chased him, and kicked him to death. July 16. (Received July 16, at '9.18 a.m.). It is alleged that M‘Leod had been in the habit of scaling those betting with him. "When he was down several hundred people surrounded him while the attack proceeded. A number of men tried to interfere, but the crowd prevented them. Numerous other alleged welshers were roughly handled. FOOTBALL. A Sydney cable states (hat the New South Wales Rugby Union have lost tho services of Mr Holden (secretary), who has been appointed secretary of the Commercial Travellers’ Association.
