THE SEDDON MEMORIAL.

Our Wellington correspondent — Wednesday uicrht's memorial meeting is much discussed in town. Most people, while rpgarding tho meeting as representative and influential, regret that it was not fixed for some other night than one carrying a charity concert of a specially ponular kind, with 3000 in attendance. bes : dfs the Synod and the theatres. The bulk of the people favor the travelling scholarship idea, but in view of the strong opposition do not discuss it at the present stage-,, hoping for a wide combination of New Zenlnnders on the broadest linos.

Probably among the most interesting memorials of the "late Risrht Hon. R. J. Seddon will be a little b"ok which the Hon. James Carroll, Native Minister, is preparing for publication. It will contain all the messages of sympathy, dirges, and expressions of grief sent bv the native people, printed in both Enclish and Maori. Many of these have not yet been published, among them the following poetical tribute from the whole Maori race, printed on the mourning card that accompanied their wreath :— fa "Na Nga Twi Maori Hp tohu Aroha, Haere atu. e Paki ki tua o Paerau, oho ana te mauri mou kua ngaro atu nei i ou iwi. Haere atu e i runga i ringaringa o aitua. Haere atu kite po whanea mai ai." Of this Mr A. L. D Frnser's' translation into Enelish is aa foHows:—"From the Maori tribes. An emblem of veneration. Go! Chief, to the realms beyond the bounds of human ken. Go! the messenger of night speaks. Fate, relentless, bears you on its wings. Go! Await us."
