THE BYE-ELECTION.
MR T. E- Y. SEDDON RETURNED. The weather continued wet for the dos* of the Westland election campaign. Yesterday {polling day) was cold, with southwest showers. With the latest returns to hand available last'night the voting was;— Seddon ... ... .- _ 2,281 Michel 1,634 Majority for Seddon, 647.
Seven small returns are to come, bat these cannot affect the result
Both candidates addressed a largo assemblage in front of tho Hokitika Courthouse, where the returns were being shown by limelight. Mr Seddon expressed his grateful thanks for the support accorded to him, and pleasure at the manner in which the contest had been conducted, Mr Seddon concluded by caliing for three cheers for his opponent. ,
Mr Michel thanked his supporters, and announced his intention of contesting the seat again at the first opportunity, when he felt sure long services would be first and sympathy second. Mr Seddon will remain oh the Coast for some little time, and visit localities where he had been unable to visit in the short time of the campaign. He has received a large number of congratulatory messages. Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, the new member for Westland, was born at Kumara, on the West Coast of the South Island, in 188*, so that he is now in his twenty-second year. As a small boy be was educated at the Kumara State School. When :the family removed permanently to Wellington he was sent to the Terrace State School, and from there he proceeded to Wellington College. On leaving the Wellington secondary school he passed the matriculation examination of the New Zealand University, and continued his studies at Victoria College. Having decided to adopt the law as a profession, he entered the office of Messrs Findlay, Dalziel, and Findlay, and some time ago ho passed the first section of bia LL.B. examination. He did not particularly distinguish himself at school or at college, except as an athlete, or, rather, as a short-distance xunner. In this capacity he represented Victoria College . for four seasons. He also played in the football teams of Wellington College and Victoria Collßge. ■
