The Tlev. D, J. Murray, who takes up his new pastorate at Mornington, was entertained at a farewell convened by the Mayor of Masterton. During his five years’ residence in Masterton Mr Murray has (says the local paper) been a good citizen, with ideas of his own concerning the good order and government of the town in which ho resided, and with the necessary ability and courage to give effect to them. He has on occasion proved' himself to be what Louis Stevenson called “a bonnio fighter,” but always a fair fighter, and he will carry away with him from Masterton the respect of even his opponents. Mr Lonis Cohen, of Wanganui, will be a candidate for the vacancy on the Senate of the University of New Zealand, which will shortly occur owing to the retirement of the Rev. J. C. Andrew. Mr Cohen was formerly a member of the Senate. Mr James Smith, head-master of the Milburn School, has had. through illness, to ask for leave of absence. Miss Cray, of Ravondbor.me, has been appointed to fill the temporary vacancy. Rev. F. W. I&itt, organising secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, paid a visit to Milton yesterday morning, and had a conference with local leaders of the No-license movement. We understand, says the ‘ Herald,’ that Mr Isitt proposes that the funds of the various No-license Leagues shook! be placed into one common fund to tight against the liquor traffic. His Lordship Bishop Verdon, who -s engaged visiting the Catholic parishes of Southland, has, says tire ‘Times,’ confirmed 276 persons—l 34 ‘males and 142 females—in the Invermrcill parish. Mr James Ross, chairman of the Waihemo County Council, left Palmerston to-day on a holiday trip to the Old Country.
