THE PRINCES STREET ACCIDENT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—Having for many years, been resident, in Dunedin, and passing along Prince-s street almost daily, I have been, struck at the feeble attempts made by the authorities to regulate the traffic. Yesterday’s accident, of which I was an eye-witness, impressed me more than ever as to the possibility of some awful catastrophe taking place some day. Had the offending express come down the east side of Princes street it would have struck down a few score of the people who were standing on that part of the roadway formerly utilised by the ordinary wheeled traffic. The public have no night whatever to stand on the roadway—not to speak of the absolute danger to themselves in their doin'! so. I think that the City Corporation might assist the property-owners on the west side of Princes street to erect verandahs, and tHfcn absolutely prohibit any person from stand in oin Princes street. ° It is unnecessary for me to draw attention to tlie reckless driving of expresses cr to the insane speed of motor cars and motor bikes along the congested parts of Princes street. The lame is not very far of! when all read traffic from Manse street to the Octagon •will be regulated to a walking pace. Perhaps some fine day a city councillor, or maybe a policeman, will bo knocked over, mid then the matter will receive the attention it deserves.—l am, etc., Citizen, January 26.
