TAPANDI RACES. The Tapanui Racing Club’s annual meeting began yesterday in lovely weather. The amount put through the totalisator was £1,245, against £489 last year, the increase being dauntless due to the exclusion of the pencillers. Results :—President’s Handicap, Lolah (£1 8s) and The Romany (£3 Is) ; Maiden Plate, Orderly (£1 14s) and Design (£4 Is); Mile and a-Half Trot, Harold’s Pet (£2 2s) and Gale (£2 4s); Tapanrd Handicap, Highland Fling (£2 12s) ; Kelso Handicap, The Brat (£2 10s); District Trot, Miss King (£2 4s) and Mountaineer (12s); Welter Hack, Orderly (£2 19s); Grand Stand, Rawmoio (£2 11s) and Ropn (£1 llsj. CIVIL SERVICE HARRIER AIN'T) AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB. The first annual sports meeting of the above club, which takes place to-morrow at Carisbrook Ground, will bo well worth a visit by anyone in search of a good afternoon’s sport. Large entries have been received, and athletes from. Canterbury, Oamary, and Invercargill will be competing. In tho Half-mile Handicap, Hector Burk will endeavor to lower the New Zealand record, and as he is just now very fit and the track is in first-class order, there is every probability that a new record will be made. Nine entries have been received for- the 100 Yards Championship, the result of which is very open, and there will be a great struggle for supremacy between the various athletes engaged. The Morningtou Band will be in attendance, and special cars will run to the gates. Afternoon tea will be provided for lady visitors to the sports. Mace 2, Dansey 3. Half-mile Flat Open Handicap.—Burk 1, Patrick 2. One Mile and A-half Flat Open Handicap.—Metville 1, Harrison 2. Bounin 3. Long Jump Open Handicap.—Pacey 1, Keddell 2, Johnson 5. One-mile Walk Handicap.—Crichton 1, Morrison 2. 100 Yards Championship.—Mitroy 1, O’Kane 2, Hoare 5. Teams Relay P*ace.—’Varsity 1, Caversham 2, Civil Service 3. OTAGO ROWING CLUB. The first three heats of the Ladas’ Challenge Cup Race were rowed over the beacon course last evening. The water was perfectly calm, and a large number of spectators, including the president and vice-pre-sident, ■watched the races from the wharves. The following are the results: —First Heat.— Crawford, Jack, Smith, Sandes (stroke) 1 Kelman, Bennett, Hutton, Whittaker (stroke) 2 A most exciting race. Won on the post by a canvas. —Second Heat.— Usaber, Clark, Taylor, Sibbald (stroke) 1 Spiers, Wilson, Perm, Priest (stroke) 2 Won by a length and a-halL —Third Heat.— Tnstone, Snow, Mills, Kirkcaldy (stroke) 1 Jackson, Brewer, Seelye, Matthewson (stroke) ... ... „. 2 Won by a length. The final, in which there will be three starters, will be rowed off at a quarter to six this evening. CYCLING. M. Randrap, three and five-milp New Zealand champion, had a nasty fall on the Timaru track on Monday, and will be unable to compete in the New Zealand championships to be decided at Nelson on February 1.
