The Wellington banquet to Sir J. G. Ward, prior to his departure for Rome, lias been fixed for tho Bth prox. Mr D. B. Waters, of Dunedin, was elected to the Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers at tho annual meeting held in Melbourne on tbe 12th inst. One of the old identities, Mrs Michael Prendergast, of Hyde, passed away on January 6. The deceased lady was seventynix years of age. Mr Percy Braithwaite has been appointed bon. treasurer of the Otago Football Association, vice Mr C. R. Martin, who has resigned owing to leaving for Wellington. Included, in the new theatrical firm of Willoughby and Ward, who are shortly due once again on these shores, will appear the names of several popular artists. In addition to Mr George Willoughby (late of Willoughby and Geach), appears (he name of Hugh Ward, who for many years was associated with Mr Willntmsm’s management ; also wo are again to welcome that old Gaiety favorite, Miss Grace Pariotta, who returns with tbe new firm, and will appear in a round of farce comedies, the chief being the latest New York success, ‘The Man from Mexico.’ The tour will be started at the Criterion Theatre in May, with the other chief centres to follow. 11 has not yet been definitely decided whether Mr Edwin Geach will join the new firm; at any rate, the combination will tour the Commonwealth under his direction. On Sunday evening the congregation at St. Paul’s Cathedral were favored with a solo by Mr Walter S. Jago, the Maeterixm tenor. Mr Jago, who is possessed of a particularly rich voice, gave an exceheat rendering of ‘lf with ail your hearts’ (Elijah). i Tbe supporters of Mr W. D. Mason, who fcoutested the Brace scat at the General Election, purpose entertaining him at a “ social.” Miss A. S. de Longucville Graham has been' recommended for the raistrosaship of the Southbridge school. A private cable received in town this morning announced tbe death at Johannesburg yesterday from enteric fever of Mr Charles Doafce, eldest son of Mr J. F.

Hoskins, of Burwood, Sydney, and Mr S. 0. Keefe, of Tamma, New South Woles. A Woffington messages stales that Sergeant Weight (chief clerk in the office of the Commissiorier of Pofioe) has been promoted to the snb-inspectaiship.
