THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN

At a meeting of Mr Wm. Pryor's North-east Valley Committee, held on Saturday evening, the outlook was reported to bo encouraging. Mr .Donald Keid's friends and supports ers met at Mosgiel on Friday evening. A strong working committee was formed, and arrangements were made to conduct a vigorous campaign. At a meeting of the Awarua No-license League it was resolved to put forward a candidate in order to secure an election in the interests of the Local Option poll. In adopting this course the League have no intention of contesting the seat against Sir Joseph Ward. No decision has been arrived at in the selection of a candidate, but a choice will be made at an early date.

The Hon. J. Carroll was given a hearty welcome at a large and enthusiastic meeting of his supporters at Gisborne on Saturday night. He made a speech having special reference to tho local contest. Mr T. M. Wilford received a vote of thanks and confidence from the electors of the Huti, whom he addressed at Petone. He said that he was opposed to Bibld-roadin™ in schools and Prohibition, and would leave the latter nuestion to the electors. He believed in the optional freehold, with a limitation of area. Notwithstanding a downpour of rain, eighteen or twenty electors assembled at Upper Junction on Friday evening to meet Mr Pryor, tho Independent candidate for Chalmers. Mr John Paisley, who occupied the chair, briefly introduced the candidate. A hearty vote of thanks, moved by Mr Collins and seconded by Mr Buttars, was subsequently accorded Mr Pryor for his address. After the meeting several of those present waited behind to make arrangements for prosecuting Mr Pryor's candidature. jA. New Plymouth wire says:—As a protest against the action of tho Wellington branch of the Political Labor League in running a candidate against Mr CKegan, several members of the local League have resigned. Mr H. B. Bedford will address the electors of Woodhangh in the Wesleyan Church this evening: also the electors of Pelichet Bay in the Albany street School gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock.

Mr A. S. Adams will address the electors of Roslyn in the Volunteer Hall, Kaikorai, on Wednesday evening, and at the Roslyn Institute on Friday evening. Our Cromwell correspondent wires :—A conference to discuss Mr James Horn's scheme for one of the Liberal candidates to retire has ended fruitlessly, Mr Murdoch's delegates considering tiero would not be uufficient time to take a plebiscite. Mr E. G. Allen will speak at Public Hall, North-east Valley, to-morrow evening. Mr A. R. Barclay will speak in Albany street School Gymnasium on Wednesday evening, Mr W. Pryor will speak at Oddfellows* Hall, North-cast Valley, to-morrow evening.
