“A HOT TIME AHEAD.”
TO THE EDITOR. ' Sir,—Your correspondent “Young Co- , lonial,” under the above heading, excels , even Mr Wm. Thomsen in recklessness of j statement and in swoenin" and j innuendo. Ho says : “ In Russia they j a.o ii„nung fur bue.iy, whim Here we are , allowing the No-license party to rob us ' of it,” etc. _ ; The liberty they are fighting for in Rus- i sia is the very liberty that we have got 1 here, and intend to use—i.e., the liberty J of the people to govern themselves and * the liquor evil by their own vote. The ( drunkenness and improvidence of the Rns- ' sian people under “ State control ” of ' liquor-soiling, forced on them whether they J want it or not, is not the least of the * causes of the revolt. Secondly, this young man, whose only - form of athletic sport most surely be gaz- , ‘ ing at the moon through the bottom of a : s long boor glass, says that No-license advo- • f cates will abolish all football reports, etc., j I when the beer tap is turned off. As 11 find from actual experience that the sillier v tire lie the more readily it is swallowed <i and believed by those whose prejudices t and appetite demand that they shall vote f
for beer, I win 'answer this by saying thai the Young Msn's Bible Union, at their late Convention, representing, I believe, , all New Zealand, passed a unanimous re3o- . lution in favor of No-license. These I young men arc all great on athletics, and the first breath •of antagonism to decent . sport would turn them from warm friends to enemies of the No-license cause. Messrs ' M'Laren and Ash ton, leading footballers, sent messages to the Endeavorers' demonstration : " For the sake of clean sport vote No-license," Many of our leading No-lioense advocates are smokers. I myself was a representative oarsman' and [ a footballer, runner, walker, and harrier of long standing, and am just as great a sport now as the first day I entered a boat or put on a shoe. Play the game, ' " Young Colonial," play the game.—l am, etc., G. Beknabd Nicholls. November 3.
