CALEDONIAN SOCIETY OF OTAGO

At an adjourned meeting of the Games and Grounds Committee, held last evening, tho programme for 1906 was finally disposed of, and a number of alterations made. It was intended tliat the prize-money should bo reduced, but on a Una! revision it was found that over £450 will bo competed for in tho two days' gathering. Mr A. Gillies was appointed referee for the running events, and Mr H. B. Courtis for the cycling events, Mr P. Miller being, as heretofore, genial referee. Tlie following amateur events were placed on tho programme : - —22oyds, 440 yds, halfmile, and one mile ran; prizes for each event, trophies, valued at £o, £2, and £l. From the large number of amateurs on the roll of the Otago Centre it is expected that there will be large fields and good competition for these events. It is intended, should entries for the ensuing gathering warrant it, that amateur events will form a feature of the society's future programmes.

'J"ht» handicap mile walk was increased to 80s, 40s, and 255. To prolong tho interest in the woodchopping competition, the experiment will be made of grouping the competitors according to handicap, and group prizes will be given. There will, of course, be no final winners, the event being decided on time It is thought by adopting this method that the interest in the events will be increased from a, spectacular point of view, and *n opportunity given to inferior men to win something.
