MR J. REID’S ADDRESS.

TO TBB BDITOB. Sir, —As a constant attendant at the temperance meetings held in the South Dunedin Town Hail, 1 crave space to say that AD Wilson’s construction upon the report of last Sunday night’s address by Mr J. Reid is utterly unwarrantable. The address was most accurately reported—as has been the case with all the meetings so far held—and no one can possibly construe anything in it to apply to the Dunedin High School. AD Reid said even boys in his own Second Standard had been seen by himself rolling home drunk on a Sunday morning, but he did not refer to Dunedin, nor does the report indicate this. Mr Smyth, also, in trying to explain, falls into quite as bad an error, for Mr Raid did not use the word “ scholars ’’ nor “in the country" in tho sentence, although be may have been alluding to the country. What he did say has been reported. Some speakers, in the excitement of the moment, make many unconnected statements, and then try to back out of them when seen in print. I know the reporter of these meetings to be a most capable man, and speakers can rely upon getting a most impartial report of their addresses when ho is present, so they must keep their heads clear and avoid rambling statements; if not, they must stand by the reports. lam saying this, sir, as an outsider, but wish to stand by what 1 know to be correct. —I am, etc., Anubeson’s Bay. October 28.
