EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS

The quarterly returns of atteotenco for the period ended September 30, 1905, which have been compiled by tbe acting s mret&ry of tbe Otago Education Bound, shew that there were 222 schools in operation in this district, employing 203 male and 321 female teachers. The number of pupils on the rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 19C96, and at the end of the quarter 19,328, comprising 9,955 boj-a and 9,373 giria The average attendance was 9,026 boya and 8,324 girls, making a total of 17,350, being 190 less than tbe total for Tbe previous quarter, and 185 more than that for the September quarter of 1904. Tbe number of the pnpds admitted daring the quarter was 904 boys and 797 girls ; total, 1,701. The averages at tbe City and adjarbui schools for the quarter wene; Knikarsu, 651; Albany street, 603; Fortuny, 561 ; George street, 558; Guersham, 516; High street, 502; Arthur street, 492; Union; street, 491; N-li Valley, 451; .Norata.l, 428; Momington, 412; Macnndrew road, 402; Kensington, 249; Bayensboume, 161 • St. Clair, 132; Anderson Bay, 122; Wakari, 82; Leith Valley, 42. The avenges at Comoro were:—Sooth School, 320; North, SU; Middle. 262. At the distract high schools;* Port Chalmers, 401; Ejdclirtha, 292; Lawrence, 250; Mosgiel, 255; Tohxmiarrira, 224; Pahnetstem, 210; Naseby, 154; Tapanni, 150; Hampden, 112. During the quarter a household school was started at* Thwarmi (OatHns).
